Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

Evidence of the ability to:

prepare and assemble at least TWO layouts with a variety of selected image elements following the job brief; ensuring spreads, chokes, reverses, deep etchings and line and tone combinations meet the job specification; colours are separated correctly, all elements are registered accurately and contact, duplication and spreads and chokes have correct exposure

transfer underlying skill of combining across safelight and roomlight environments (it is important substrate for reproduction is identified and competencies demonstrated with a clear identification of printing processes)

find and use information relevant to the task from a variety of information sources.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

explain how choice of printing process affects combining strategy and settings

outline steps required to produce combined image

identify image elements unique to this job specification

state criteria to ensure colour separated images meet job specification/printing process

describe masking technique which ensures accuracy and economy

outline equipment considerations essential for accuracy

explain method of producing spreads and chokes (trapping)

describe how basic exposure data for contacting and duplicating emulsions is determined

list aids to ensure quality control

name factors that ensure quality of output through a processor

describe procedures that ensure accuracy of registration

list factors that ensure screen elements are assembled correctly

explain how the correct percentage of tints is ensured

discuss how to ensure all job specifications are met

explain the care that must be taken when matching to Pantone Matching System (PMS) colours

outline content and state the location of manuals, safety and other documentation relevant to this task.
